Igna Schwartz

Igna Schwartz, a Namibian-born artist, relocated to South Africa in 1983 to pursue a BA in Fine Art at the University of Pretoria. After a successful 12 year career in advertising and design, she rediscovered her passion for art while embracing motherhood in Cape Town. In 2005, she established her own retail business, offering unique stationery and vintage-inspired products. In 2020 she seized the opportunity to prioritize her art, and closed the chapter on her retail business and delved into her true passion.

Her artistic expression includes a diverse range of mediums, with a focus on acrylic paint, pencil work, collage, textile, and stitching. Layering and mark-making are central to her artistic process, with annotations and intuitive scribbles giving way to collage elements that merge seamlessly with sketches and paintings.

Her artwork exudes a whimsical and abstract expressionism, embracing vibrant colours and playful compositions. Through the juxtaposition of seemingly mundane and unrelated objects, Igna weaves together new stories, breathing life into forgotten remnants.
